THE GRANITE MYTH GRANITE
ABSORBS A LOT IF LIQUID MATERIAL: Granite is actually less absorbent
comparing to other surfaces like plastic for example. Think about this; granite
is also used as construction material indoor and outdoor to withstand nice hot
weather and all kinds of rain and snow cold weather.
IT'S EASY TO
STAIN GRANITE: Not true! If you spill something on granite countertops,
generally if wiped away after work is done, granite will not stain. These days
all good fabricators will seal granite countertops with high quality sealer
which protects granite from stains 10 to 15 years. However, we consider any
sealer as agent that suppose to slow the rate of stain, which means if granite
is exposed to oil or grease in prolonged period of time, those oils and grease
will penetrate into granite and stain it.
STAINS IN GRANITE WILL
STAY FOREVER: Even if granite is stained with oil, most of the time
those stains could be professionally removed with paste or poultice that is
used in granite industry to draw out stains.
GRANITE LOOSES ITS
SHINE OVER THE YEARS: We have some customers that had their granite
countertops installed decades ago and they all say one thing about it; "It's
been same since the installation day". Unlike all other kitchen surfaces,
granite never shows wear and tear from daily use. You can cut on it, you can
take baked goods straight out of oven and put on your countertops and nothing
will happen. It's for sure highly scratch and heat resistant. You can't achieve
or get this feature with man made surfaces like plastic.
GRANITE IS
HIGH MAINTENANCE: We recommend our customers to use mild soap and water
and that is pretty much what would keep granite countertops clean. Sealer on
granite countertops should be applied once a year if you are not sure what kind
of sealer is used, but the sealer that we use will require re-applying every 10
to 15 years. This type of sealer is applied before or after countertops
installation and it is at no extra cost to our customers. Lot of people are
concerned about bacteria in their granite countertops, and they should be,
because bacteria can be found on all countertops including granite. If you are
concerned about bacteria in your granite countertops, you should use
anti-bacterial soap and clean off your countertops.
GRANITE IS
LUXURY AND EXPENSIVE: Luxury; YES! Expensive; NO! You will be surprised
when you compare natural stone, like granite to other so called "luxury
surfaces". The cost of the granite is economically more manageable to granite
fabricators then to companies that make other solid surfaces which are man
made. Lot of those companies are even trying to imitate granite colors and
attach the word "GRANITE" to their products, but they are not even close to
cost, value and beauty of the granite countertops.
RADON IN GRANITE:
Radon is cancer causing natural gas that you can't smell or taste.
Radon is measured "picoCuries per liter of air," or "pCi/L," and Environmental
Protection Agency says that 4 pCi/L is the level that is becoming health
hazard. Radon can be found really anywhere in your home especially areas closer
to grounds, like basements. Radon can be reduced by ventilating areas properly
but you can never reduce it to zero.
Now, let's talk about radon in
granite. This type of information was placed publicly by the companies that
compete with granite countertops surfaces and complete information is
irrelevant and it has purpose only to scare the consumers from purchasing
granite countertops. True information is that granite could emit radon but the
false information is that granite emit levels of radon that is health hazard.
In fact, granite emits so little of radon that lot of experts in radon testing
are not even concerned, because it doesn't pose any health risk. The best way
to prove this inaccurate slander about natural stone granite is to test it
yourself. There are radon test kits for home use that could be purchased at
home improvment stores. Those companies that sell surfaces and are competition
to granite are using hand held "Geiger Counters" to determine level of radon in
granite. We suggest not to use "Geiger Counters", because they are hand held
device that is not calibrated to measure accurately any radon in granite.
"Geiger Counters" always react at even attempting measuring radon emissions.
They are also audible (very loud), which makes any level of radon more dramatic
than actually is. So, radon level in granite is perfectly safe and not health
hazard. If you are concerned about radon in granite, definitely you should
check it yourself instead of anybody else. |
